Traveling With Your Device

When you travel you should always carry with you a copy of your prescription, equipment suppliers contact information, insurance information, a list with mask type and size along with information on all other replacement supplies. Just to be safe you should carry with you a copy of your medical records (e.g., a list of your medical conditions, allergies, names and dosages of your medication, and the name and contact information of your physician.

Many devices are compatible with the power supply on airplanes. If you want to use your PAP device on the airplane, contact the airline a couple of weeks before your flight to arrange seating close to a power supply, to confirm the type of power cord or adapter you need, and to ensure you have all the necessary documents. Please note that you cannot use humidifiers while on an aircraft. Most devices automatically compensate for altitude changes.
  • Airport Security may require you to show a Prescription (Rx) from your physician verifying that you are carrying medical equipment. Be sure to plan ahead and obtain this from your doctor, and keep it on hand for airport security.
  • Always carry on, never check your PAP device. As a medical device it does not count towards your carry on.
  • Always keep a copy of your prescription and list of supplies with you when you travel. You'll be able to get replacements in case of damage/loss/theft.
  • Read the TSA regulations for carrying CPAPs on airplanes so you know what to expect.

  • Please, read the "Air Travel" notes above to help you prepare for your trip.
  • Most PAP devices automatically adjust to the various power supplies used in different parts of the world and will accept 100-240V, 50-60Hz, without any special adjustment. Please note that you will need to use the correct plug adapter/converter for the outlets in the countries you are visiting. Your nearest electronic store will usually have a converter for the country you are visiting.
  • For long flights the airline may ask you to take a battery as a back up since it is a medical device.
  • If you are traveling to areas where you might experience power outages then you may want to take a battery with you.
Cruise:

Just like with your airlines you should contact your cruise lines several weeks ahead of time and inform them of your medical condition. To help them make appropriate accommodations and help you plan ahead.

  • Always carry on, never check your PAP device.
  • Find out if you need to bring an extension cord for your device.
  • Confirm that you are allowed to bring distilled water onboard for your PAP device.
Outdoors:
campingYou can keep your PAP device running, even when electricity is hard to come by. We advise against using a deep cycle marine battery with your PAP device since it might damage the unit and void the warranty on your PAP device. There are several options for campers, boaters and people traveling to rural areas for powering your PAP device:

  • DC Power Cable: One end plugs into the machine and the other end plugs into the car.
  • Battery: Certain PAP devices have accessories like a battery which can be purchased separately. A connector may be required to hook the DC cable directly to the battery.
  • Solar Charger: Most PAP batteries last for about 8 hours. To recharge the battery you can plug it into a wall outlet. But if you are outdoors you can recharge using a solar charger. The solar charger option is only available for the Transcend unit.
Storms can cause power outages leaving you without a way to power your PAP device at night. This can wreak havoc on your sleep. Be prepared for storm season and power outages with a battery for your PAP device. Click to learn about Alternative Power Options while you are traveling or at home.

*When traveling always take out the water from the humidifier chamber so your device does not get damaged.
*Heated humidifiers should not be used with battery power since it will drain the battery much faster.
*Batteries & Accessories are not billable through insurance.
